Residents of Ohio know all too well about the ever-changing weather. It certainly is no secret that the summer heat is brutal this time of the year even with the fickle mood of Mother Nature. This seasonal heat is no joke! And these past couple of months has been no exception. Cold air and a working air conditioning system are the secret formulae to enduring Ohio’s summer heat! Well, perhaps it’s not really a secret, but your air conditioning system is the key to making it through the summer. Could you imagine if your air stopped working this season? Do you know the basic troubleshooting steps you can enforce if it did go out? Do you have a plan in mind to keep your family comfortable while waiting for repairs if necessary? If you haven’t thought that far ahead just yet, no big deal! That’s what Bexley Heating & Cooling is here for!

What Can You Do To Troubleshoot If Your A/C Stops Working This Summer?

There are a few things you can try yourself before calling in an HVAC professional. First and foremost, if your A/C suddenly stops working properly, you should inspect your thermostat and confirm the batteries are still fine. It’s a common issue for homeowners to think that there is a bigger issue going on with the cooling unit when in all reality, the batteries simply need changed. However, if you check the thermostat and your batteries seem fine, but your A/C troubles persist, try lowering the thermostat temperature by 5 or 10 degrees. Don’t forget to turn the mode on “cool.” Doing this may kickstart your unit back to blowing cool air again. Another thing you can check is the circuit breaker. It may be that the switch got flipped and just needs to be flipped back to “on.”  If this doesn’t solve your problem, you may move on to the next step which is checking the compressor outside. Confirm that it is running. And as long as it is making its normal whirring-like noise, that is an indication nothing is wrong with it. However, if it’s not running or it is making an unfamiliar sound, contact us as soon as you can! In addition, while you are outside, check the vicinity to ensure there is no physical damage to the outdoor unit. Things you should be on the lookout for is fallen outdoor items and large branches that may have landed on top of your unit, as well as water damage.

What Is Not Safe To Do If Your A/C Stops Working This Summer?

We definitely do not recommend attempting a DIY repair. This is at the top of our list of things not to do when your A/C stops working. Though it may seem like a DIY repair is simple and manageable, there are many things that can go downhill when performing one. Take our word for it and leave the big repairs to a licensed HVAC specialist. Another thing you don’t want to do during this time is use heat-inducing components like the stove. If your air is out for the moment, you don’t want to add to the heat by utilizing your stove. In addition, you should also not open windows and external doors. Doing this will let that summer heat inside your home much quicker. Last of all, a common belief is that opening your freezer will aid in lowering the temperature in your home when your A/C is stubborn. It is not worth spoiling your groceries for the tiny fraction of cool air you may get from doing so.
